1. Can I get a fire station tour?

With some notification, you usually can. We handle walk-ins regularly, but we have a better organized and more focused tour when we have some notification ahead of time. We try very hard to accommodate most reasonable requests.

2. Why do you flow test hydrants?

Fire hydrants are flowed at least once a year in Maryville and its protection district. This is done to flush the water mains, to determine available water pressure for firefighting purposes, and to identify problems with the system for repair. Testing occurs during the spring and summer months.

3. How can I become a firefighter?

Applications are available at the Fire Department. You must have a high school diploma or a GED and a valid Illinois driver’s license by state law, be at or above the age of 18, and be a resident of Maryville for at least a year.

4. How can I get a child seat inspected or installed?

Maryville Fire Department has certified child seat technicians. We will inspect and help with installation by appointment. Call (618) 344-8099 to schedule an appointment.

We prefer to manage car seat requests after 4:00 pm on weekdays because daily work assignments and fire and emergency calls still take precedence. We cannot guarantee a technician will be available for walk-in requests.

5. What can I burn? What restrictions apply?

By state law, you can only burn developed brush, such as tree limbs and storm debris, on-site. Construction materials, household waste, scrap wood, pallets, and leaves cannot legally be burned. Open burns must be a safe distance from buildings, power lines, and property lines, and they should not be done under extremely dry or windy conditions.

6. Where do I get a burn permit? Is there a fee involved?

Inside the City of Maryville, contact the Fire Department at (618) 344-8099. No fee is involved, but an on-site inspection may be required before a permit is issued.

7. How can I become a part-time firefighter?

The same qualifications for full-time personnel apply for part-time personnel. Part-time personnel are limited to no more than 32 hours per week and not more than 1,200 hours annually. Part-time hire processes are held as needed.

8. Does the Fire Department clean chimneys?

No. We will usually provide a list of independent businesses that offer chimney-cleaning services, but we do not recommend or single out any particular service. If a homeowner experiences problems with their chimney, we can come out and examine the chimney for potential fire hazards or similar issues.

9. What can I do if my tap water is discolored?

Sometimes during fire hydrant testing, people experience a temporary discoloration due to sediment in the water lines. In most cases, running the tap for a minute will resolve the problem.

10. How can I prevent my pets from starting fires, and how can I keep them safe in the event of a fire?

These tips can help you prevent fires caused by your pets:

• Beware of water bowls on wooden decks – Do not leave a glass water bowl for your pet outside on a wooden deck. The sun’s rays when filtered through the glass and water can actually heat up and ignite the wooden deck beneath it. Choose stainless steel or ceramic bowls instead.
• Extinguish open flames - Pets are generally curious and will investigate cooking appliances, candles, or even a fire in your fireplace. Ensure your pet is not left unattended around an open flame and make sure to thoroughly extinguish any open flame before leaving your home.
• Invest in flameless candles – These candles contain a light bulb rather than an open flame, and take the danger out of your pet knocking over a candle. Cats are notorious for starting fires when their tails turn over lit candles.
• Remove stove knobs - Be sure to remove stove knobs or protect them with covers before leaving the house. According to the National Fire Protection Association, a stove or cook top is the number one piece of equipment involved in your pet starting a fire.

Keep your pets safe

• Affix a pet alert window cling – Write down the number of pets inside your house and attach the static cling to a front window. This critical information saves rescuers time when locating your pets. Make sure to update the number of pets listed.
• Keep pets' equipment near entrances when away from home – Keep collars on pets and leashes at the ready in case firefighters need to rescue your pet. When leaving pets home alone, keep them in areas or rooms near entrances where firefighters can easily find them.
• Secure young pets - Especially with young puppies, keep them confined away from potential fire-starting hazards when you are away from home, such as in crates or behind baby gates in secure areas.
• Pets left alone can’t escape a burning home – Consider using monitored smoke detectors which are connected to a monitoring center so emergency responders can be contacted when you’re not home. These systems provide an added layer of protection beyond battery-operated smoke alarms.

Garage/Yard Sales

1. Do I need a permit to have a garage/yard sale?

No, the Village does not require or offer permits for garage/yard sales.

Please note, garage/yard sales are prohibited in all commercial districts and properties adjacent to any state route (i.e., State Routes 159 or 162).

2. Is there a time limit imposed on a garage/yard sale?

All sales will be limited to a maximum of a three-day period.

3. Can I use signs to advertise my garage/yard sale?

Yes. Signs are limited to four (4) signs per sale, including the sign erected on the sale premises. The signs, which may not exceed 2' X 3' in size (excluding stakes) must contain the following information:

1. Address of the location of the sale
2. Date(s) of the sale
3. Address of the person conducting the sale if different from the location of the sale

Signs must be erected using wooden or metal stakes, and cannot be attached to power poles, trees, street signs or vehicles. They may be placed on public right-of-way or private property. Signs placed on private property must have the permission of the property owner at the location. Signs must be placed so as not to impede or block visibility for vehicular traffic. They cannot be placed on Village property or right-of-way adjacent to Village property (parks, cemetery, public buildings, etc.). They may be erected the morning of the day of the sale and must be removed no later than 9:00 p.m. on the last day of the sale. Failure to comply with this provision may subject you to be cited with an ordinance violation.

Heritage Museum

1. I'd like to help, but I do not know anything about a museum. Do I have to be on the committee?

The committee is always looking for help. A volunteer could take on a special project or help with the filing or assist in the cataloguing of items. An interested individual does not have to be a committee member to help or have prior experience. Contact Ed Kostyshock at (618) 345-4500 or Janet Butts at (618) 345-4964 for more details.

2. I have something that might be of interest. What is the museum interested in acquiring?

Anything that is associated with Maryville and its history would be a welcome item. Examples include letters, pictures, tools, or items pertaining to the Village, including but not limited to the businesses, coal mine, baseball, schools, churches, homes, families, and clubs. Items can also be loaned to the museum. Consider having the Museum Committee copy your pictures and then place them for display.

3. I would like to visit the museum. What are the hours?

The museum currently has no set hours, but contact Ed Kostyshock at (618) 345-4500 or Janet Butts at (618) 345-4964 for arrangements to visit. Volunteers usually work one day a week and, when there, welcome anyone who wants to visit.

1. How do I rent a pavilion?

2. How do I access the Parks?

Drost Park can be accessed on the west side via Rt. 159, then east on Vadalabene Drive, and then south on Schiber Court until you see Myron Provence Parkway.

Fireman’s Park is in the center of town off Rt. 159.

Fred Winter’s Park is located off of West Main. Take Gary Avenue to Duke Drive. Parking is available only on the street. Please do not to block driveways.

Mike Noga Memorial Park is located between Vadalabene Drive and Rt. 162…both are east of Rt. 159. As of yet, there is no parking.

3. Can anyone fish in the lake?

Yes, the park is not restricted to only Maryville Residence. But we do ask that you respect the park and adhere to all the rules. You must have a license if you 16 years of age or older.

4. Do you need a fishing license?

Yes, if you are 16 years of age or older.

5. Are there size and limits on the fish?

Largemouth Bass, 15” minimum length, limit 3 per day, under 15” must be released;
Bluegill, limit 25 per day;
Crappie, limit 10 per day;
Channel Catfish, limit 6 per day;

6. What size motor can I have on my boat?

Only battery powered trolling motors are allowed.

7. Are there any poles available to rent?

Yes, at the Maryville Library, you are able to rent a pole with a valid Lewis and Clark Area library card. A small bag is provided with your pole by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. It includes a “Beginner’s Fishing Guide” booklet, “Knot Guide” booklet, hooks, bobber, lures, and hook remover.

8. Is there a “Friends of the Park” group? How do I volunteer to help make the park even better?

9. How do I become a Master Gardener?

Contact: Contact University of Illinois Extension in Edwardsville at 618-656-7050.

10. What is the length of the trails?

There is a map of the trails with the total feet of each section as well as each loop. Look under Maps, then click on the Drost Park Map.

You can even print the map if you wish, but the document is very large.

11. How do I rent a pavilion and what does it cost?

On this web site drop down under Departments, then Park & Rec to Pavilions. Each pavilion has a schedule of reservations listed as well as a link to the Rental Application that lists the fees. A pavilion is not secured until the Comptroller has the application and the fee.

12. Can we have alcohol in the park?

Alcohol is not allowed in the park, unless you have rented a pavilion and acquired the necessary insurance through Village Hall.

13. What about clean up after using a pavilion?

We ask that you clean up your area so that it is usable by
others after you leave. If you have excess trash, please put it in the dumpster in the enclosed white fence area which is located as you leave the park via Myron Provence Parkway.

Police Department

1. How do I obtain a copy of a police report or accident report?

Police reports generally are not released to the public. Exceptions include those listed in the Freedom of Information Act or subpoena. Accident reports are available for a $5 fee. The Records Division of the Maryville Police Department is open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday.You may also request an accident report by mail.

2. There is a power outage in my area. Do you know when the power will be restored?

That information is not provided to the Maryville Police Department. Please call Ameren Illinois at (800) 755-5000 or Southwestern Electric Cooperative at (800) 637-8667.

Public Works

1. My street light is not working. What should I do?

The Village of Maryville does not maintain the Street Lights but if you will provide us with the address of the light that is in need of repair, the problem will be reported within 24 hours the report. Please make your report via phone (618) 345-7028 Ext 5; or email (publicworks@maryville-il.us).

2. Can I burn my leaves?

Yes. Maryville allows burning of brush and leaves on Friday's and Saturday's from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during favorable weather conditions. Please do not attempt to burn during periods of high wind. Please also be aware it is unlawful for any person to burn substances upon any of the public streets, sidewalks or alleys in the Village. Burning of trash and/or rubbish is prohibited.

3. How can I get rid of brush and limbs from my yard?

The Village maintains a chipping program, and offers brush and limb pickup on the first consecutive Monday and Tuesday of each month. If you would like to be added to the list for pickup, please call (618) 345-7028 Ext. 1. Limbs must be cut into pieces manageable by one person. The resulting mulch is available for free. Please call to make arrangements for pickup or delivery.

4. How can I get some FREE MULCH

FREE MULCH is available several times per year contact Public Works Director Patrick Presson at 345-7028 x 5, to confirm availability and delivery.

Water Department

1. How do I get water service?

Applications for water service are available to download online, or at Village Hall. Completed applications must be submitted in person with valid identification and $100 deposit at the Water Office located at 2520 N. Center Street. Deposits are payable by cash, check or money order; the Village is unable to accept credit or debit cards.

2. When is my water bill due?

Water bills are mailed on the 1st of every month, and are due by the 15th of every month.

3. How do I pay my water bill?

The Village of Maryville offers several options for payment of your water bill.
• AUTO PAY: The Village’s newest and easiest free payment option! With Auto-Pay your payment is directly withdrawn from an authorized account on the due date specified. An account statement will still be mailed to you, but you will no longer have to worry about writing a check.
• FCB BANKS now accept water payments: You must have your water bill stub present to make your utility payment.
• E-PAY online payments at www.vil.maryville.il.us: E-Pay accepts Mastercard, American Express, and Discover.
• VILLAGE HALL: Cash, check or Money Order payments are accepted in person during normal business hours, or you may use our after hour drive-up drop box. The Village of Maryville is unable to accept credit or debit card payments, nor can we accept payment over the phone.
• US POSTAL SERVICE: Payments may be mailed to Maryville Water Dept, 2520 N Center, Maryville, IL 62062.

4. Is trash service included in my Maryville utility bill?

No. The Village does not provide trash service. You must contact Allied Waste at 1-800-634-8395 to set up a trash service account.

Water Department - Automatic Meter Reading

1. How does the automatic meter reading system work?

The automatic meter reading system is a much faster and more efficient method of reading meters.

An encoder-receiver-transmitter (ERT) is a wholly contained electronic device designed to read the meter register and transmit the signal. The ERT can be found in several locations.

3. Does having the new automatic meter reading system mean I will never see the Maryville Water Department again?

No. Occasionally a Maryville Water Department field service technician may need to service the encoder-receiver-transmitter (ERT) or the meter if it isn't working properly. Additionally, we will have to change the battery in 15 to 20 years.

4. My encoder-receiver-transmitter is installed (ERT). Now what?

The biggest change is that the meter reader won't be coming by monthly to read your meter any more. You will continue to get your bill on the same schedule as before.

When to Call 9-1-1

1. What is 9-1-1?

9-1-1 is a three-digit telephone number that you can call 24 hours a day for police, fire, or emergency medical services. According to nationwide statistics, it can take up to 2 1/2 minutes to find your telephone directory and another 30 seconds to locate the correct number. In an emergency, 3 minutes is a long time, time that can be saved by remembering to call 9-1-1.

2. When should I call 9-1-1?

9-1-1 is to be used for emergencies only. If you believe that you or someone else is in immediate danger, or there is threat to property, call 9-1-1.

3. When should I not call 9-1-1?

You should not call 9-1-1 to:

• Ask for directions
• Get your car unlocked (unless someone is trapped inside)
• Obtain weather reports
• Report power outages or water repairs
• Request general information

4. What do I need to do when I call 9-1-1?

9-1-1 is only a telephone number. Quick response depends on important information you provide the dispatcher. The 9-1-1 telecommunicator will ask you a series of questions. Remain calm and be prepared to provide the following:

• Location of your emergency - Your name, address, and telephone number appear on the computer terminal when you call 9-1-1, but this information must be verified for your sake and that of the patient
• Nature of your emergency
• Your telephone number - We need the number from which you are calling in case the connection is lost or we need to contact you again

If you are calling for a medical emergency, be prepared to provide the following additional information:

• What is wrong with the patient
• What is the age of the patient - Age is one determining factor for the type of response and type of treatment required (an infant choking would require a different response than an older patient)
• The gender of the patient
• Is the patient conscious or not?
• Is the patient breathing?
